TURF TIP: Managing nematodes with AGADOR® Turf nematicide and miticide

Plant parasitic nematodes can be separated into two groups: ectoparasitic and endoparasitic. Ectoparasitic nematodes do not normally enter the root and feed from outside the root surface whilst endoparasitic nematodes enter the root and feed from within. Both can be either migratory meaning free movement within the soil or plant, or sedentary meaning once on or within a root they do not move.

Examples of sedentary and migratory nematodes in Australian turf are Ring and Sting nematodes. Both are ectoparasitic, with Ring being sedentary in nature and Sting being migratory in nature. The migratory nature of Sting within a profile can provide challenges in control meaning that delivery of nematicides applied is a 
primary focus for effective control.

What is AGADOR®?

AGADOR® is both a turf nematicide and miticide consisting of 20 g/L abamectin. Whilst there are other abamectin based nematicides available for use, what sets AGADOR® apart is the unique iron chelate which encapsulates the active. Abamectin on its own will fix strongly onto organic matter in profiles, meaning product applied for parasitic nematodes around the rootzone may not reach the required target zone effectively. Chelates remove the associated charge and the iron chelate used in AGADOR® reduces the risk of fixation. This unique formulation ensures even and consistent delivery of the active into the profile where nematodes are present.

AGADOR® and Australian Nematodes

Multiple studies have consistently shown AGADOR® to be highly effective against the damaging Sting nematode in Australian turf situations. Whether your Sting nematode count is low or high, AGADOR® provides flexibility and effectiveness in Sting management in either a single or multiple application making it an ideal rotation or stand-alone option.

When do I apply AGADOR®?

Parasitic nematodes like Sting feed on emerging root systems so in the case of warm season turf species population levels will increase in Spring and Autumn. Sting nematodes feed by inserting its long stylet into the root injecting an enzyme which breaks down the cell contents which are then sucked back through the stylet. Affected root tips cease growing and display symptoms of both nutrient and moisture deficiency with wilt occurring. As the turf root system is weakened it becomes easier for other pathogens to infect the plant along with other concerns during the summer period. In turf stands with historic concerns with Sting it is best to commence applications of AGADOR® once spring growth commences or once a formal count of the population identifies it being above the threshold. Application timing and Sting management with AGADOR® should be focused on plant health, so monitoring root mass and development is a useful guide to determining the success of the program. This monitoring can be as simple as removing a plug and washing to observe growth, or sending to a laboratory for a more formal assessment.

How do I apply AGADOR®?

• To ensure evenness of AGADOR® through the profile it is recommended that it is mixed with AGRAL® Spray Adjuvant at 0.42% v/v. 

• Use XC08 nozzles with an applied water volume of approximately 1000 L/ha.

• Apply to turf with moisture on it such as dew. If turf is dry, irrigate lightly first.

• Water in with between 3 – 6 mm of irrigation to assist in positioning in the rootzone.
