SPIIO™ Soil Sensors - Illuminating the world below through actionable, site-specific data
Build your turf management strategy from the ground up. SPIIO™ soil sensors give you precision insights into crucial components of turf health beneath the surface, including soil temperature, moisture and salinity. Autonomous soil sensors gather site-specific data hourly and relay it to your dashboard, accessible on your smartphone or computer. Simply subscribe, connect and bury your sensors to start collecting actionable insights.
Technical information
Sensor data is generated hourly and transmitted through wireless cell communications to a cloud-based dashboard. The sensor collects four measurements:
- Temperature – ranges from -20 to 70 °C
- Moisture – capacitive sensor calibrated to measure volumetric water content (VWC) displayed as a %
- Salinity – displays electrical conductivity in dS/m, mS/cm or TDS
- Light – collect light volume in Lux or footcandles when buried with the top exposed
The sensor is compact in size, measuring 180 mm x 47 mm x 48 mm and can be buried at varying depths, signal permitting, with a battery lifespan of 3 to 5 years.
The dashboard allows the user to access soil data relevant to their properties and review historical values to help with decision-making. The dashboard also displays hyperlocal GPS weather data, reducing reliance on less geographically relevant weather pages and apps.
Data-driven insights help you meet industry demands
Users can log in using the smartphone app on their mobile device or through a web browser on their desktop, laptop or tablet to view key metrics on their properties anywhere in the world, anytime. Users can monitor specific data regions by establishing custom thresholds to help make better-informed decisions. Some examples include:
- Soil temperatures triggering preventative insect, weed and disease treatments
- Irrigation performance and scheduling needs
- Rainfall coverage and uniformity across sites
- Cart/Player traffic decisions following rain events
- Evaluation of soil flushing operations to reduce salinity
- Shade studies to improve growing environments
- Stakeholder/Management reports and capital planning

Focused weather forecast data
The weather tab on the dashboard offers forecast data within 5.2 km2. The forecast includes ambient temperature, wind speed, relative humidity, precipitation, pest risk, evapotranspiration (ET), dew point, and sun hours, among other metrics. The weather widgets include hourly breakdowns and color-coded thresholds that are customisable.
