The Turfectionists™: Interview with Cameron Hall

Meet Cameron Hall, 2020 Australian Sports Turf Managers Association Claude Crockford Award Winner, Superintendent at Kew Golf Club and proud Turfectionist™!

Kew is the third oldest club in Melbourne, and is home to the Hoddle Survey Tree; the earliest known survey tree remaining in the State, which has been added to the Victorian Heritage Register. In 2012-2018 there were major works done to reinvigorate the club. Following that, the club turned their attention to the outer play areas of the course with the intention to turn out-of-play areas back to native vegetation. Cam takes us through the first area of regeneration - the fourth hole renovation - as well as Simpson Lagoon, the club's main water storage and an area where many native birds nest. He talks of dealing with the Yarra River and water harvesting restrictions, and the reduction in mowing on non-playing surfaces that the project has achieved.

The ASTMA Claude Crockford Environmental Award recognises golf course superintendents for their commitment to sustainable land management, long-term environmental planning, community involvement and overall environmental stewardship of their golf course. Syngenta have sponsored the award for many years, and are delighted to be able to put the spotlight back onto past winners, and take a look at the projects that they won the award for, as well as find out what they are up to these days at their club.
